The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is celebrated annually on 21 March to commemorate the day in 1960 when police opened fire and killed 69 people during a peaceful protest against apartheid in Sharpeville, South Africa. By proclaiming 21 March as an international day in 1966, the United Nations General Assembly committed the international community to redoubling its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
The Canton of Valais, in association with the towns of Sierre, Sion, Martigny, Bagnes, Monthey and Upper Valais, launched the first Valais Week Against Racism in 2010. Its popular success led to it being repeated every year, with different themes each time.
Every year, this week of action provides a special opportunity for reflection, discussion and awareness-raising. It also serves as a reminder that respect for human rights and the fight against racism and discrimination remain key issues in contemporary societies.
The week of action against racism and discrimination will take place from 21 to 28 March 2026, for the 16th consecutive year.
