In May, 2007, Sierre region launched a project of Sierre/ Crans-Montana agglomeration.
In 2008, an inventory of challenges in the perimeter of the agglo (19 communes) has been made out through a participative process. Industrial ecology is among the targeted subjects.
Project objective and axes
The objective of Sierre process is to promote industrial ecology on the scale of the Sierre/Crans-Montana agglomeration (19 communes) so as to turn it into a durable, innovative and attractive territory. In order to achieve this objective, the following action axes have been defined:
- Metabolism of green waste, management and economic development of resources
- Project of regional management of resources
- Detection of industrial symbioses on the scale of the region
- Development of activity areas (coordination of the use of areas at the level of the agglomeration, creation of ecoparks: Daval / Mangold (map, chart, …), detection of opportunities in existing areas: Alcan Rio Tinto / Novelis, Alcan/Chippis, Île Falcon)
In the beginning of 2000, Sierre town and region wanted to establish a project of eco-industrial agglomeration. This project is in line with the industrial ecology move by the town of Sierre from 2007 and is as a pilot project in the industrial ecology cantonal approach
"ECHO Valais, source of durable economy" by the
Office of economic development of French-speaking Valais which has started in 2008. Sierre Region supports the useful moves jointly conducted with the town of Sierre by relying on the Council of agglomeration as the reference body.
In 2009, the project’s main objective consisted in detecting eco-industrial symbioses in the region of Sierre - to do that, two steps were necessary:
- Analyze potential eco-industrial symbioses;
- Define optimization axes.
The following means have allowed conducting these steps:
- Investigation on durable development and industrial ecology potential from companies of Sierre agglomeration (109 feedbacks from 3570 workstations). Know more.
- Custom visits of main flow generators in the region;
- Participative workshop for companies of Île Falcon (1st of October, 2009) with about thirty businessmen of Île Falcon (around 700 jobs). Know more.
At the end of this process, identified and priority industrial symbiosis tracks are the following and were exhibited during the presentation on the 17th of December, 2009 (64 participants), then validated by the Board of Directors. Echo Sierre decided to prioritize the following tracks (to be validated during the session of the 12th of April, 2010) and building up mixed workgroups.
Energy: A total review of energy consumption (mainly electricity) of the industrial zone of Île Falcon will be conducted. The aim mainly is to detect the use peaks and define which financial economies are possible by consuming at the best moments. Other example: a remote heating allowing serving a residential block of Chalais is being studied and should be done in 2012. The installation will be fed by the waste of forest sorting. ECHO Sierre / Crans-Montana support this kind of approach.
Know more.
Waste: there is currently no waste-storing space in the industrial area of Île Falcon. The aim is to conduct a feasibility study on both the economical and practical plan, so as to open such an area and institute a platform of exchange of waste likely to be used again locally (cloths, pallets, cardboards, etc.).

Mobility: a mobility plan, including Île Falcon, TechnoArk, Novelis, Alcan Rio Tinto and even other areas, is being studied so as to transport collaborators and goods. First, private solutions such as carpool are to be considered because they are easier, less expensive and faster to implement, compared to public transportation variants. Know more
